Cayuga's mascot in 1954. The ship's newspaper, the Cayuga Weekly" featured the dog in this excerpt -  "Nothing new except the addition of another rate to the signal department. Chief Yoeman Buckingham recruited him in Guam. The new signalman's name is "FLAGS D. TACKLINE" His service number is O.N.218 DDE; his rate is OSCVS. He hasn't been of much use yet, hasn't got his sea legs. So far, his only contribution has been in keeping the flag deck clean by eating everything in sight. Diet to date - One eraser (the only one we've got), several pencils, the bottoms of several pairs of pants, and only he knows how many flags. He's being fed his tot intravenously because he's to young to drink. So far he's hasn't been house - I mean ship - broken, but we're trying to teach him to use the OP'S room for a head (underneath the Navigator's table)." (Photo courtesy Don Bjornhahl)

For some sailors, shore leave was that cherished time when the main mission was to locate a suitable bar for a spell of drinking and entertainment. This scene was taken in 1954 at a bar in the city of Sasebo, Japan. (Photo courtesy Don Bjornhahl)
