HMCS CAYUGA STORIES

Here is the message from Lt. Cdr. W.P.Hayes, Captain of HMCS Cayuga, to the crew on Christmas day, 1953. The ship was enroute to Korea. On Christmas they were between Kwajelein and Guam and the temperature was in the 90 degree range.

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS

Since there is very little snow between Kwajelein and Guam, it is difficult to get into the Christmas mood we are normally used to. Temperatures of 100 degrees are not compatible with our versions of Santa Claus and Christmas trees but Christmas was never intended to be those things anyway. It's the time when men celebrate the birthday of a child born in Bethlehem nearly 2,000 years ago and consider the implications of that birthday. Its time for us to renew a faith built on love and good will towards men. It is also a family time and a time when we think especially of our loved ones. Being sailors and far from our homes we probably have a better understanding of these matters then many people and at this particular time can certainly give them more honest appreciation.

Though this Christmas might be a bit warmer than we usually have, there is no reason why it should not be a good one. In fact, there are many reasons why it should be excellent. I wish all in "CAYUGA" a happy Christmas.

Signed

Lt.Cdr. W.P.Hayes
