The KL-43C is an off-line text encryption terminal specifically designed to send and receive classified messages over unprotec tetelephone lines and radio links under rugged field conditions. The device is better described in the KL-43C Operators Manual. The KL-43C became public during the Contra Hearings when LtCol Oliver North held up a KL-34C and said he used them to communicate with his team. A version of the KL-43 was famously used by Oliver North to communicate with his assistant, Fawn Hall, and others while managing clandestine operations in Nicaragua in support of the "Contra" rebels. The device was paraded in front of cameras during the Iran-Contra congressional hearings.
The KL-43C measures 6.65 x 3.75 inches. This machine, manufactured by TRW, is an adaptation of language translator technology, and includes a keyboard for input and an LCD for output. It also contains a built-in modem, a telephone coupler, and the facility for connecting to a printer
