Lieut. P.D. Budge, D.S.C.
R.C.N, 1st Lieutenant. Ed Curtis, was with him in Cornwallis in 1950
and again in 1955 aboard HMCS Quebec. Ed recalls " He is remembered by
all that served with him; he was to be both feared but was one of
the most respected Commanding officers of his day. I can remember one day
returning to the Quebec after a shore leave a group of us were walking
through the Halifax dockyard and Budge was across the road and approaching
us from the other direction. I don't know why to this day the reason that
non of us saluted as we passed him 15-20 meters away. He took about
2 more steps and let out "HALT" that I'm sure could be heard all over the
dockyard. He stood his ground and ordered us to return to him. He then
proceeded to verbally give us a tongue lashing that I have never forgotten
and that was it. He made an about turn and continued on his way and we
slinked back to the ship in absolute fear at what had just happened".
