The system was initially procured by the East Pakistan Inland Water Transport Authority (when Bangladesh was still part of Pakistan) and whose goal was to improve the navigability of the rivers and river ports in East Pakistan.
It was the intent to use the Decca Navigator chain for hydrographic surveys with plans to convert the chain to a fully navigational system for both sea and air.

Construction of the Red slave of the Bangladesh chain at Dohazari has just been completed. Because of flooding during the monsoon season, the living quarters are all on stilts, as are the septic tanks. The elevated bunds connect the buildings. Mymensingh was also constructed in a similar manner. It is not known if Master and Green were built the same way. (Photo courtesy Doug Sim) |
A view from the coil house along the bund. The transmitter and diesel buildings are on the left. On the right are the living quarters for staff and the 'Inspection Bungalow' in which the installation crew lived. The damage to the bund is due to just one monsoon. (Photo courtesy Doug Sim) |
