Acting as a plane guard for the Canadian aircraft
carrier HMCS MAGNIFICENT.

In April of 1951, while participating in exercises
in the Caribbean with HMCS
MAGNIFICENT, the two ships encountered a drifting Dominican passenger
vessel, the Gilbert Jr. The vessel, with 12 women passengers, a crew of
2 and a load of livestock including a horse was "buttoned on" by MICMAC
and towed some 200 miles to Willemstadt, Curaco. There, the tow was transferred
to a tug and the two Canadian ships sailed for Trinidad. (Photo via

Fueling astern of HMCS MAGNIFICENT around
spring 1951. In this uncommon refuelling technique, the fuel line was pumped
full of air and floated astern. The ship to be fueled would pick up the
hose and secure it.
For whatever reason, the fuel line from "Maggie" has ruptured and
is spewing oil as attested by the long slick between the ships. (Submitted
