at Pier 9, Hamilton, Ont. Both ships were berthed in Hamilton as part of

The vessels are capable of carrying two 20 ft ISO
containers on the open deck aft. The decks are fitted with the necessary
power cables to energize the containers which are mission-specific operational
payloads.

| MCDV's are equipped with a Bofors 40mm Model 60 Mk 5C rapid fire gun ( right side), and two 12.7mm machine guns. The Bofors gun is mounted on the forecastle deck and the arc of fire extends forwards by +/- 120 degrees. The machine guns are mounted one either side at the front of the bridge deck. | Aft view from HMCS Shawinigan while the ship was moored at Owen Sound. Each Kingston class vessel carries the Model 540 RHIB (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat) manufactured by Hurricane plus a Zodiac boat. The reason the Zodiac is needed for rescue missions has to do with the limitation of the crane. The RHIB is too heavy for the crane if there are two people in the boat. The Zodiac is the primary rescue boat and the 540 is the backup. The vessels also sail with a spare Zodiac in rope stores but in a disassembled state. (Photo by Ian Baker VE3OZN) |

Exercise FRONTIER SENTINEL 12 (EX FS12) is a combined Commander Joint Task Force Atlantic (JTFA), Commander U.S. Coast Guard Atlantic Area, and Commander U.S. Fleet Forces full-scale exercise. The 2012 exercise was led by Joint Task Force Atlantic and included separate mine counter measures (MCM) and migrant vessel scenarios. Other government departments and agencies involved in the exercise included Public Safety, RCMP, Canada Border Services Agency, Public Health Agency of Canada, Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness and the Cape Breton District Health Authority, amongst others.
The Frontier Sentinel Exercises series was initiated in 2006 to collaborate on information exchange, planning and coordinated responses between the operational commands, their tactical elements, and government and non-government agencies, to secure and defend threats in the maritime domain of Canada and the U.S.
