This is a close-up of item 'D' in the image of the plain discharge
transmitter. The spark discharges between two mushroom shaped cast iron
electrodes, which are mounted on two horizontal brass spindles supported
on vertical brass rods. These brass rods pass through heavy ebonite pillars,
which are brought to the outside of a teak container and are supplied on
their upper extremities with suitable washers and nuts for making the required
external connections. The container is made of 1.5 inch teak and is lined
first with asbestos and afterwards with lead in order to deaden the sound
of the discharge. (Image courtesy Handbook of Technical Instruction
